The New iPhone 6 and 6 Plus

The highly anticipated iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have been released and will be coming to South Africa soon. Let’s take a look at what we can expect from Apple’s newest smartphones.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were released on the 12th of September with pre-orders topping Apple’s records for any other iPhone device at four million in the first 24 hours after its release. The smartphone will be shipped from the 19th of September in the US and is expected to arrive in South Africa sometime in October or November. The price of the device in our market has not been announced yet with speculators estimating that the iPhone 6’s retail price will start at R9 999 and the iPhone 6 Plus’s price will begin at R 10 999, for the respective 16GB base models. The phone does not have a 32GB version but will be available instead in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB.

Critics of the iPhone have said that the company is moving with trend of making cellphones larger and thus following in Samsung’s footsteps. This is ironic, considering that the companies have been parties to several international law suits since 2011 regarding Samsung apparently stealing patented design features from the iPhone and other Apple products.

The iPhone 6 is often compared to the Samsung Galaxy s5, which boasts a higher storage capacity of 16B plus up to 128GB of micro SD storage and a 16MP rear camera compared to the iPhone’s 8MP. However, it is important to note that the iPhones have bigger pixel sizes and three sub-pixels within each pixel. This arguably makes the iPhone cameras better in terms of the quality of photographs. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7 inch display compared to the 5.1 inch display of the Samsung, which is however topped by the 6 Plus’s 5.5 inch display.

Aside from increased size and storage space, the iPhone 6 and 6 plus come with a more rounded design, reminiscent of the first three generations of iPhones. Apple’s newest operating system iOS 8, is of a thinner shape and lighter weight. Other upgrades include longer battery life, and improved picture as well as sound quality.
