Apps : the Electronic World’s Way Forward

The computer has always been a host to an operating system that allows the user to run a variety of programs. With Microsoft’s continued domination of the South African market, we are accustomed to the install wizard that accompanies all MS third party apps.

Yes, those are apps as well. Like the PC, apps have also evolved. The personal computer has become handheld, and the success of the handhelds can hinge on app developer participation, just look as far as Blackberry. Apps, short for applications refers to 2 two things (i) a file that can be executed on a device, (ii) we can apply its functionality to make our lives easier or at the very least a little more fun.

appsThe secret for an app to make it in a sea of competition, is to satisfy a need better than everyone else or better yet, create a need where none existed. Steve Jobs knew this. The support of the app developer community was pivotal to the iPhone’s success. The rest as they say is history. For the fundi, the mobile devices at the time had reached their full extent. To the layman he didn’t even know he needed apps on his phone until the iPhone.

Making an app free is another way to gain some leverage amongst the competitors. Free apps are able to monetize their efforts by serving up a wide array of adverts within the app interface, a practice called In-App advertising. Would be advertisers bid to have their marketing pushed to the user of the app and the more installs an app has the more lucrative the bidding can be. A symbiotic relationship between the developer and advertiser exists, where the advertiser gets access to the user segment while the developer finances the app project. The segment can be very specific to the advertised product/service, e.g. car insurer ad for an app that logs a vehicles gas usage. The trick, is to not offer all of the app’s features within the free version, but keep the essential advanced features for those who are prepared to pay for it. It’s all well and good to capture all the info but if you are unable to mail it or export it, then how can you share. To sweeten the deal, you can also offer that ads will be removed within the paid version.

Apps are here to stay, the electronic world we dreamed of beyond the Millennium is a world controlled remotely by apps. The budding entrepreneur can look at the world and see where it needs help, all he/she has to do is make the world know that help is needed and they will surely be craving the solution.

I have travelled the full spectrum of what technology has to offer. The creature that is my career continued its evolution into the Project Management environment, managing major software development for some major players, right up to implementation, roll out and even training. Changing little, but changing often is my strategy for progress.
